An Article is a word used before a noun to define whether it refers to something specific or general.

There are three articles in English:

  1. A
  2. An
  3. The

Articles are part of determiners in English grammar.


Types of Articles

1. Indefinite Articles: A / An

  • Used before singular countable nouns.
  • Used when referring to something for the first time.

Use a before:

  • Words beginning with a consonant sound.

➤ Use of An

Use an before:

  • Words beginning with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u)
  • Words with a silent ‘h’

  • an hour, an honest man, an heir

📌 Rule: SOUND matters, not spelling.

Example:

  • a European (yo sound → consonant sound)
