Articles: Indefinite and Definite Articles with Examples
An Article is a word used before a noun to define whether it refers to something specific or general.
There are three articles in English:
- A
- An
- The
Articles are part of determiners in English grammar.
Types of Articles

1. Indefinite Articles: A / An
- Used before singular countable nouns.
- Used when referring to something for the first time.

Use an before:
- Words beginning with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u)
- Words with a silent ‘h’

Example:
- a European (yo sound → consonant sound)
When to Use A/An
